Rwandatel lays of employees

March 12, 2009 • Mobile and Telecoms

Rwanda’s leading telecoms company, Rwandatel, this week laid of 120 employees as part of an initiative to restructure the company.

Employees were given 24 hours to vacate their offices and the company’s premises. No official comment was given by the company as to the tight deadline for employees to leave.

Says Cleophas Kabasiita, Rwandatel Public Relations Manager in a statement: “We cannot work at the same pace that we did back then, before Lap Green took over. Now that we are using the new 3G-GSM service as well, it was necessary to carry out thorough assessment of our human resource base after which all employees who did not meet the assessment by 40 percent were laid off,”

The layoffs were unexpected, as the company has enjoyed steady growth in its customer base since 2007.
