Ghana close to 100% mobile penetration

According to an article on, the country has now reached 98% market penetration for mobile phone subscriptions.

The article is based on statistics obtained from the National Communications Authority (NCA) of Nigeria. It details findings that Ghana now has 11,962,224 active mobile phone subscriptions as at January 2009, representing the almost 100% market penetration.

According these figures, this is almost ten times the number of fixed line subscribers, currently below 150,000. The article further says that MTN currently owns more than 50% of the market with over 6 million subscribers, followed by network providers Tigo and OneTouch.

Zain, who entered the Ghanaian market late last year, is already gaining market share from other competitors.
